EXTREMELY
RARE PAIR OF CHINESE HUANGHUALI YOKEBACK ARMCHAIRS
Rare
pair of capacious, high, yoke-back armchairs with s-shaped
arms. The crestrail, also s-shaped, derives from the
horns and yoke of Asian Water Buffalo, while cleverly,
providing a comfortable headrest. The carved rondel
on the s-shaped back splat depicts a phoenix, symbolizing
the empress. Examples can be found in the Nelson-Atkins
and Metropolitan Museums. The chairs are remarkably
free of repairs and replacements, except for the replaced
cane seating and a small Dutch on a back leg.

HUANGHUA LI HORSESHOE CHAIR
The
curved rail, composed of five sections, each connected
by double scarf pressure peg joints, ends in reverse
carved pommels. The S-shaped back splat has beaded flanges
at the top and a ruyi shaped, relief-carved cartouche
containing an architectural element supported by a pair
of standing Dragons surrounding a flaming pearl.
The
splat also displays a distinctive abstract grain design
The side and front aprons are surface carved with scrolling
dragons. The replaced soft rattan seat is supported
by palm fiber in the traditional mode. The foot stretcher
shows extensive wear and as do the bottoms of the feet.
