Varlegated Scholar's Rock

Brecciated golden-beige marble enclosing a carved piece of grainy pure calcite. This marble is very likely from a deposit quarried for hundreds of years in suburban Beijing. I.M. Pei used it in the construction of the Fragrant Hills Hotel near Beijing. The low relief carving depicts the Putai God of Wealth.

Now mounted as a scholar’s table screen in a finely carved reticulated wood stand. The delicately and finely painted plaque displays a pair of golden pheasants resting on a flowering prunus tree surrounded by Chinese tree peonies.
